St Agnes of Bohemia
Agnes, the daughter of a king [Bohemia] at an early age was faced with bethrotals and proposals from various powerful figures, amongst which Frederick II, the Roman Emperor. She declined, her heart belonged to Christ, she wanted to pursue the religious life. She appealed to Pope Gregory IX for help. The pope was persuasive; Frederick magnanimously said that he could not be offended if Agnes preferred the King of Heaven to him.
